Ubud sits inland among rice terraces and monkey forests. This is spiritual Bali: yoga retreats, temple visits, traditional dance performances. The town itself has gotten crowded and commercial, but step outside and you're surrounded by green. Best for: culture seekers, yoga practitioners, art enthusiasts. First-timer strategy: split time between Ubud (culture, 3 nights) and a beach area (Seminyak or Uluwatu, 3-4 nights). That covers both sides of Bali without constant moving.

Dry season
Dry season runs April through October. This is peak tourist time, especially July and August when Australians escape winter. Weather is reliably good, humidity is lower, and rice terraces are green from the preceding wet season. Book accommodations early for July/August.
Wet season
Wet season (November through March) brings daily rain showers, usually in the afternoon. Mornings are often clear. The island is less crowded, prices drop 20% to 30%, and the landscape becomes even more lush. December/January around holidays still gets busy.
The shoulder months
The shoulder months (April/May and September/October) offer the best value. Dry weather, thinner crowds, reasonable prices. I'd probably recommend September specifically: summer crowds have left, weather is still dry, and prices are favorable.

Temperature stays consistent year-round, 80 to 90 degrees. The question is rain, not heat. Even during wet season, rain rarely lasts all day. Bring a light rain jacket and adjust your timing. Temple visits work better mornings; beach time can flex around afternoon showers.
Seven days minimum to justify the 20+ hour journey. Less than a week feels rushed after accounting for jet lag and travel time. You'd barely scratch the surface before heading home.
Ten to fourteen days hits the sweet spot. Split between Ubud (3-4 nights), a beach area (4-5 nights), and maybe Uluwatu (2-3 nights). That allows for temple visits, rice terrace walks, beach time, cooking classes, and actual relaxation. Bali rewards slowing down.
Two weeks or more lets you add the Gili Islands (off Lombok), Nusa Penida day trips, or deeper exploration of less touristy areas like Amed or Sidemen. Some travelers find they want to stay longer once they arrive. The cost of extending is relatively low.
Don't try to see everything. Bali's distances are short but traffic is brutal, especially around Seminyak and Ubud. Moving between areas takes longer than maps suggest. Pick 2-3 bases and explore from each rather than constant hotel hopping.
