Booking
Finnair is the most direct way to reach Lapland from the US. You fly nonstop to Helsinki, then connect on a short domestic flight to Rovaniemi, Kittilä, or Ivalo, the three main Lapland airports. Total travel time from the East Coast is around 10 to 12 hours including the connection. Finnair operates daily domestic flights to Lapland year-round, with extra frequencies during the winter season when Northern Lights tourism peaks.
Cheapest Months to Travel
January (after New Year), March, and September usually have the best fares. Late January through February still has plenty of snow and Northern Lights activity but fewer tourists than the December holiday rush.
Peak Travel Seasons to Avoid
December is the most expensive month by a wide margin due to Christmas village tourism and Northern Lights demand. Late February through early March also sees higher prices around the winter school holiday period in Europe.
Best Time to Book
For winter Lapland trips (December through March), book 3 to 5 months in advance. Finnair's domestic flights to Rovaniemi and Kittilä sell out fast during peak winter. Summer midnight sun trips (June through July) need about 2 to 3 months advance booking.
Midweek Advantage
Midweek flights (Tuesday, Wednesday) tend to be cheaper on both the transatlantic and domestic legs. Weekend changeovers at Lapland resorts drive up Friday and Saturday pricing.
Time Difference to Keep in Mind
Lapland follows the same time zone as Helsinki, Eastern European Time (EET), which is +7 hours ahead of New York (EST) and +10 hours ahead of Los Angeles (PST). During winter, daylight is extremely limited, with only a few hours of twilight in December. In summer, the sun doesn't set at all for several weeks.
