Kyoto doesn't have its own airport, but Japan Airlines gets you there through Osaka Kansai (KIX). From LAX, JAL flies nonstop to KIX in about 12 hours, and the Haruka Express train covers the last 75 minutes to Kyoto Station. From other US cities, you connect through Tokyo and either fly domestically to Osaka or take the Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto. Either way, JAL handles the longest portion of the trip.
Cheapest Months to Travel
January, February, late September typically offer the lowest fares, falling outside peak tourist seasons. You will find better availability and more competitive pricing during these months.
Peak Travel Seasons to Avoid
Cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) and autumn foliage (mid-November to early December) are the most expensive times. Golden Week and New Year also push fares up.
Best Time to Book
Book 8 to 12 weeks ahead for the best prices. For cherry blossom or fall colors travel, 3 to 5 months early is recommended because Kyoto accommodation fills up fast too.
Midweek Advantage
Tuesdays and Wednesdays offer cheaper fares. Kyoto-bound travelers often fly out on Thursdays for long weekends, which lifts those prices.
Time Difference to Plan For
Kyoto is on Japan Standard Time (JST), +14 hours ahead of New York and +17 ahead of Los Angeles. Same time zone as Tokyo and Osaka.
