Delta Air Lines Partners With Amazon to Bring Next-Generation Wi-Fi to Its Fleet From 2028

Mundo Trip | April 2, 2026

Delta Air Lines has announced a major partnership with Amazon to bring high-speed satellite internet to hundreds of its aircraft, with the rollout set to begin in 2028. The two companies confirmed the deal on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, with Delta set to become one of the first major US airlines to offer Amazon Leo-powered in-flight Wi-Fi at scale. For the tens of millions of passengers who fly Delta every year, it marks the beginning of a significant upgrade to the in-flight connectivity experience.

What Is Amazon Leo and Why Does It Matter

Amazon Leo is Amazon's satellite internet service, built around a constellation of thousands of satellites positioned in low Earth orbit roughly 370 miles above the Earth's surface. This is more than 50 times closer to the planet than the traditional geostationary satellites that have powered in-flight Wi-Fi for years. That proximity is what makes all the difference. Because the satellites are so much closer, the signal has far less distance to travel, which dramatically cuts the lag that has made older in-flight Wi-Fi slow and frustrating.

Under the new agreement, each Delta aircraft equipped with Amazon Leo will have a single purpose-built phased array antenna capable of delivering download speeds of up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 400 Mbps. To put that in context, Delta CEO Ed Bastian described the new service as delivering speeds two to three times and potentially up to four times faster than anything Delta currently offers. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called it a "game-changing" experience for passengers.

What It Means for Delta Passengers

The practical impact for travelers is significant. With Amazon Leo-powered Wi-Fi on board, passengers will be able to stream movies and TV shows in high quality, upload photos and videos in real time, join video calls, play online games, and stay connected to work applications all at speeds comparable to what they would experience on a home broadband connection. This is a meaningful leap from the patchy, slow connectivity that has historically made in-flight Wi-Fi more of a frustration than a feature for many travelers.

Importantly, Delta has confirmed that Amazon Leo Wi-Fi will remain free for all Delta SkyMiles members, continuing the airline's existing policy of offering complimentary connectivity to loyalty program members. Delta currently has more than 163 million SkyMiles members, meaning the vast majority of regular Delta flyers will access the faster service at no additional cost.

The rollout will begin with an initial installation on 500 aircraft in 2028, starting with domestic narrow-body Boeing and Airbus jets. Delta will continue using its existing Wi-Fi providers, Viasat and Hughes, until the Amazon Leo rollout expands across the wider fleet.

Delta Choosing Amazon Over Starlink

The announcement is also significant from a competitive standpoint. By selecting Amazon Leo, Delta has effectively chosen Amazon's technology over Elon Musk's Starlink, which has been aggressively expanding its own in-flight Wi-Fi partnerships with airlines around the world. Amazon Leo, and Starlink are now in direct competition for the in-flight connectivity market, and Delta's partnership is the biggest endorsement Amazon Leo has secured in the aviation sector to date. JetBlue had already signed an agreement with Amazon Leo, making it the first US airline to commit to the service, but Delta's scale is in a different category entirely.
