Europe Is Changing Entry Rules for American Travelers What You Need to Know About ETIAS

If you are planning a trip to Europe later this year or in 2027, there is an important change coming that every American traveler should be aware of. A new system called ETIAS will soon become part of the process for entering many European countries, and it will slightly change how you prepare for your trip.

ETIAS, short for the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is a pre-travel authorization that will be required for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the United States.​​​​​​​

It is important to understand that ETIAS is not a visa. It is simply a security screening system that allows European authorities to review traveler information before arrival.​​​​​​​

You can think of it as similar to the system used by the United States for incoming international travelers.​​​​​​​

ETIAS is expected to launch in the final months of 2026, although an exact start date has not yet been officially confirmed.​​​​​​​

Travelers will receive advance notice before the system goes live. In addition, there will be a transition period after launch, meaning travelers may not be immediately required to have an approved authorization during the early phase.

Full enforcement is expected to follow after this initial rollout period.

ETIAS will apply to U.S. citizens traveling to around 30 European countries, including most popular destinations within the Schengen Area such as France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, and others.

One important exception is Ireland. Although it is part of the European Union, it is not part of the Schengen Area and will not require ETIAS.

If your trip includes both Ireland and any Schengen country, you will need ETIAS for the portion of your trip that enters the Schengen region.

It is also worth noting that the United Kingdom has its own separate entry authorization system, which is different from ETIAS.

Once ETIAS becomes active, travelers will need to apply online before their trip through the official European Union website.

The process is expected to be straightforward and will require:

• Passport details
• Basic personal information
• Travel-related information
• Answers to a few security and health-related questions

In most cases, applications are expected to be processed quickly, although some may take longer if additional checks are required.

Once approved, the authorization will be electronically linked to your passport. You will not need to carry a separate document.

Another change is also happening at European borders that can easily be confused with ETIAS.

Europe is introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is expected to be implemented around 2026. This system will replace traditional passport stamping with digital records, including biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints.

The key difference is:

• EES happens at the airport when you arrive
• ETIAS must be completed before you travel

Both systems are part of Europe’s updated border process, but they serve different purposes.

At this point, no immediate action is required. ETIAS is not yet active, and travelers can continue to enter Europe under the current rules.

• Plan ahead if you are traveling toward the end of 2026 or beyond
