Travel Alert: JetBlue Raises Checked Bag Fees by Up to $9 as Iran War Drives Up Fuel Costs

Mundo Trip | April 1, 2026

JetBlue has raised its checked baggage fees by as much as $9, effective Monday, March 31, 2026, as the ongoing war in the Middle East continues to disrupt global oil supplies and push airline operating costs to new highs. The move makes JetBlue one of the first major US carriers to directly pass rising fuel costs on to passengers through increased fees.

What Has Changed

The updated policy affects most economy passengers travelling on domestic routes, with higher charges now applied to both first and second checked bags. Additional fees still apply for passengers who add baggage less than 24 hours before departure.

JetBlue has clarified that not all travellers will be impacted equally. Customers holding eligible co-branded credit cards or those with higher-tier loyalty status will continue to receive benefits such as a free first checked bag. Additionally, many passengers on transatlantic routes will still have baggage included as part of their fare.

Why Is This Happening?

The fee increases are a direct result of soaring jet fuel prices driven by the US-Iran war, which began on February 28, 2026. Iran's efforts to close off the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for roughly a fifth of the world's oil, have caused crude oil prices to swing wildly and pushed jet fuel costs sharply higher. Airspace closures across parts of the Middle East have added further pressure by forcing airlines to fly longer routes that burn more fuel.

According to energy market intelligence firm Argus Media, the average price of a gallon of jet fuel reached $4.62 as of Monday, up from just $2.50 the day before the conflict began, an increase of nearly 85% in just over a month. Jet fuel typically accounts for around a quarter of an airline's total operating costs, making it one of the most significant expenses in the industry.

JetBlue said in a statement: "While we recognise that fee increases are never ideal, we take careful consideration to ensure these changes are implemented only when necessary." The airline added that raising fees on optional services would allow it to keep its base airfares more competitive while continuing to offer complimentary snacks, drinks, unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi, and seatback entertainment screens onboard.

A Wider Industry Problem

JetBlue is not alone in feeling the pressure. Earlier this month, the CEOs of Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines jointly reported that higher jet fuel prices had already added approximately $400 million in combined operating costs. Airlines around the world are facing the same challenge, with carriers in Asia, Europe, and Latin America also raising surcharges or adjusting ticket prices in response to the fuel crisis. As of now, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines have not announced similar baggage fee increases, though analysts expect more US carriers to follow in the weeks ahead.
