Royal Air Maroc and American Airlines Expand Codeshare, New Direct Flights From Los Angeles to Morocco Launch June 2026

Mundo Trip | April 2, 2026

Royal Air Maroc, Morocco's national carrier, is expanding its codeshare partnership with American Airlines starting June 7, 2026 the same date it launches a brand new nonstop route between Casablanca and Los Angeles. The expansion means American travelers on the US West Coast will, for the first time, have a direct connection to Morocco and onward to Africa, with seamless booking through American Airlines.

What Is Actually Changing

From June 7, 2026, Royal Air Maroc will operate three flights per week between Casablanca and Los Angeles on Boeing 787 aircraft. Each flight takes approximately 12 hours. This route restores nonstop connectivity between the US West Coast and the African continent for the first time in seven years, following Ethiopian Airlines' withdrawal from Los Angeles back in 2019. Royal Air Maroc will be the only African airline operating at LAX once this service begins.

Alongside the new route, the expanded codeshare with American Airlines will allow passengers to book seamless connecting flights operated by American from Los Angeles to a range of popular US destinations under a single booking. The confirmed codeshare routes from Los Angeles include:

  • Los Angeles – Honolulu
  • Los Angeles – Kahului
  • Los Angeles – Kona
  • Los Angeles – Lihue
  • Los Angeles – Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles – Phoenix
  • Los Angeles – San Francisco
  • Los Angeles – Seattle

This means a traveler flying from Hawaii or the Pacific Northwest can now book a single itinerary all the way through to Casablanca and beyond into Africa — all under the American Airlines and Royal Air Maroc partnership.

What This Means for Travelers to Morocco and Africa

Royal Air Maroc operates out of its hub in Casablanca, which serves as a gateway to over 100 destinations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. For American travelers who have previously had to connect through European hubs like London, Paris, or Madrid to reach Morocco or West Africa, the new Los Angeles route offers a far more direct option from the West Coast.

Royal Air Maroc is also a member of the oneworld alliance the same alliance as American Airlines, which means AAdvantage miles can be earned and redeemed on Royal Air Maroc flights. Travelers with AAdvantage status will also enjoy the benefits of their tier when flying with the Moroccan carrier.

Why Royal Air Maroc Is Launching This Route Now

The timing of the Casablanca to Los Angeles launch is no coincidence. The route was announced in December 2025 and is launching ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, with Morocco set to co-host the 2030 tournament. The route is part of Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou's broader growth ambition for the airline. He confirmed that 2026 will see at least 10 new international routes added to the network, following the delivery of around 10 additional aircraft since 2023 and the opening of nearly 20 new international routes in recent years.

The Los Angeles route is also a strategic move to position Casablanca as a key hub connecting North America with West Africa giving passengers from LA access to destinations like Cairo, Lagos, and Accra through Royal Air Maroc's African network.
