United Airlines Just Changed Its MileagePlus Program. Here Is What Every US Traveler Needs to Know

United Airlines has officially overhauled its MileagePlus loyalty program, with sweeping changes that took effect on April 2, 2026. The updates represent the most significant shake-up to United's frequent flyer program in years and will directly affect how millions of American travelers earn and redeem miles. If you fly United even occasionally, this is news you need to understand before your next booking.

The core message is straightforward. If you hold a United co-branded credit card, these changes are good news. If you do not, they are not.​​​​​​​

The biggest change is in how many miles members earn per dollar spent on eligible United flights. Previously, all general MileagePlus members earned a flat rate of 5 miles per dollar spent on eligible United tickets. As of April 2, that rate has dropped to just 3 miles per dollar for members who do not hold a United co-branded credit or debit card. That is a 40% reduction in earning power for casual United flyers overnight.

At the same time, members who do hold a United co-branded credit card will now earn significantly more miles than before, in some cases up to double what non-cardholders earn on the same flight. United's Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in a statement that the best way to get value from MileagePlus going forward is to hold one of the airline's credit or debit cards.

Elite status members will also see lower base earning rates unless they also hold a United co-branded credit card, a change that surprised even some of United's most loyal customers.

Perhaps the most controversial change is what happens to passengers booking United's basic economy, the cheapest fare type. Starting April 2, most travelers who book a basic economy ticket will earn zero MileagePlus miles unless they hold United elite status or carry a United co-branded credit card. Previously, all MileagePlus members earned miles on basic economy regardless of card status.

This makes United the latest major US carrier to effectively eliminate miles earning on its cheapest fares for casual travelers. American Airlines made a similar move recently, and Delta Air Lines has had this policy in place for years. The message from all three major carriers is increasingly clear: basic economy is a price to get on a plane, not a way to build loyalty rewards.

For United cardholders, the picture is considerably better. In addition to the higher earning rates on flights, all United co-branded credit card holders will now automatically receive at least a 10% discount on every United flight booked with miles. Cardholders who also hold Premier elite status will receive at least 15% off award flights. These discounts apply automatically, no code needed, and represent a meaningful improvement in the value of United miles for cardholders.

United is also offering additional Saver-level award space in its Polaris business class to anyone who holds a United card, giving cardholders more options when redeeming miles for premium cabin travel.

Not all United cards unlock the higher earning rates automatically. Holders of the United Gateway Card which has no annual fee, and the United MileagePlus Debit Rewards Card will need to spend at least $10,000 on their card within a calendar year before they unlock the higher cardmember earning rates. Cards with annual fees, such as the United Explorer, United Quest, and United Club cards, unlock the higher earning rates immediately from the first purchase.

These changes create a clearer divide than ever before between United's most engaged customers and everyone else. For frequent United flyers without a co-branded card, the program has become noticeably less rewarding overnight. For those who do hold a card or who are now considering getting one, the program has improved in several meaningful ways.

If you fly United regularly and do not currently hold a United credit card, it is worth evaluating whether the higher earning rates and automatic award discounts justify adding one to your wallet. The math is now considerably more compelling than it was before April 2.

For occasional United flyers who book basic economy and do not hold a United card, the honest answer is that MileagePlus has become a much weaker proposition. In this case, it may be worth considering whether a general travel rewards card, one that earns transferable points usable across multiple airlines, offers better overall value for your travel spending.
