The new service is part of Alaska Airlines' broader strategy of expanding seasonal routes to destinations with strong leisure demand. Rather than introducing year-round service, the airline has scheduled the Portland–Steamboat Springs flights specifically for the busiest part of the ski season, when demand for travel to Colorado is at its highest. Alaska Airlines already serves Steamboat Springs from Seattle and San Diego, and the addition of Portland strengthens the airline's network for travelers heading to the Rocky Mountains during the winter months. The route also gives passengers from across Alaska Airlines' network additional connection opportunities through Portland.
