Somewhere easy that doesn't involve too much planning. Caribbean all-inclusive resorts work well—everything's on property, meals and drinks included, limited decisions needed. Mexico beach towns (Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta) also work. Avoid places that require extensive planning (like multi-city Europe trips) or complicated logistics (like safari trips) until you know how you travel together.

All-inclusive makes sense if you're okay staying on resort property and want to eliminate food/drink costs. Flexible booking (room-only or bed-and-breakfast) works better if you want to explore local restaurants, prefer boutique hotels, or like flexibility in your daily plans. For beach vacations where you'll mostly be at the resort, all-inclusive often provides better value. For city trips or adventure travel, flexible usually makes more sense.

Pick destinations with options for both. Beach resorts with nearby towns (like Playa del Carmen) let one person relax while the other explores. Cities with both cultural sites and food scenes (Barcelona, Rome) appeal to different interests. Mountain destinations offering both adventure (hiking, mountain biking) and relaxation (spa, wine tasting) work well. Avoid places that heavily favor one style —hardcore adventure destinations or pure relaxation resorts work best when both people want the same thing.

This is a personal relationship question, not a travel question. Most couple's packages default to one bed (king or queen depending on property). If you prefer separate beds, request this during booking—some properties have limited two-bed rooms. European hotels often have smaller beds than US standards, and some only offer double beds (smaller than a queen).

Depends on the trip cost and circumstances. Insurance makes sense for expensive international trips booked far in advance, trips during hurricane season to Caribbean destinations, or if either person has job uncertainty or health concerns. Domestic trips under $2,000 booked 1-2 months ahead probably don't need insurance. Read policy details carefully—most exclude cancellations for "any reason" unless you pay extra for that coverage.

Discuss total budget before booking anything. If one person wants to spend more than the other can afford, the person wanting the upgrade can cover the difference—but have this conversation early. All-inclusive packages even out costs during the trip (nobody's uncomfortable splitting restaurant checks). Consider destinations where your combined budget goes further— Mexico and Central America over Europe, shoulder season over peak, less-popular islands over trending ones.

2-3 months ahead balances price and selection for most destinations. Peak periods (holidays, school breaks) need 4-5 months. Last-minute bookings (2-4 weeks out) can save money if you're flexible on dates and location. Book further ahead if you have specific date requirements, need time off approved at work, or want a particular property that tends to sell out.

Adults-only sections or resorts eliminate screaming kids at pools, chaotic buffets, and family-focused entertainment. If you're trying to relax and decompress, the extra $30-50 per night often pays off. If you don't mind families and kids, the mixed properties usually have more restaurant options and larger facilities. Don't pay the premium just because it sounds romantic—pay it if you specifically want to avoid resort chaos.

One person books flights, the other chooses the hotel. Or alternate who plans each trip. Some couples do better with structured tours where decisions are made for them. Others prefer totally flexible trips with no advance plans. Figure out what works for you—there's no universal right answer. If planning causes fights, consider booking a package that includes more decisions already made (all-inclusive, guided tours, fixed itineraries).

Most packages book per person or per room, so adding another couple just means booking another room. Benefits: shared costs for rental cars and excursions, built-in dinner company, someone to watch your stuff at the beach. Downsides: coordinating four people's schedules, navigating different budgets, less alone time. Works best with couples who already travel well together and have similar vacation styles. Choose accommodations with multiple rooms or separate units—villas, adjacent hotel rooms, or vacation rentals.
