American Airlines Chosen to Anchor Phoenix Sky Harbor’s First New Terminal Since 1990

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is preparing for a major long-term expansion, with American Airlines selected as the primary carrier for its planned West Terminal. The project will introduce a new passenger terminal at the Arizona airport for the first time since Terminal 4 opened in 1990.

The development is part of Phoenix Sky Harbor’s broader plans to accommodate future passenger growth and modernise its infrastructure. The airport expects the new facility to provide additional capacity while supporting the continued development of its domestic and international network.

American Will Be the Primary Airline at the New Terminal

American Airlines already has a major presence at Phoenix Sky Harbor and operates the airport as one of its key hubs.

The airline currently operates more than 300 peak daily departures from Phoenix, connecting the airport with more than 100 destinations. American says more than 20 million customers travel through Phoenix on its services each year, highlighting the importance of the airport to its network.

American has also maintained a long-standing connection with Phoenix, dating back to 1930. Its selection as the primary carrier for the future West Terminal is therefore expected to support the airline's continued operations and growth at the airport.

Phoenix Needs Additional Terminal Capacity

The Terminal Is Still Years Away

Although American's selection has now been announced, construction of the West Terminal is not expected to begin immediately.

Phoenix Sky Harbor currently anticipates moving into the design procurement stage in 2027, with construction potentially beginning around 2029. The airport has identified the early-to-mid 2030s as the potential timeframe for the terminal to open, although the schedule could change as planning and construction progress.

The final number of gates, terminal layout and detailed airline operations will be established as the project develops.

What the Project Means for American Passengers

The future terminal is expected to provide American Airlines with additional space to handle its growing Phoenix operation.

For passengers, the project could eventually mean access to newer terminal facilities and additional capacity at one of American's major U.S. hubs. It could also provide the airport with more room to accommodate future domestic and international services.

However, travellers should not expect any immediate changes to their airport experience. American continues to operate from Phoenix Sky Harbor's existing facilities, and the future West Terminal will not affect current bookings or terminal assignments at this stage.

Phoenix Is Also Upgrading Its Existing Airport Facilities

The West Terminal is part of a much larger programme of improvements at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

The airport is also investing in upgrades to Terminal 4, including improvements to baggage systems, passenger infrastructure, moving walkways and other facilities. A new six-gate north concourse at Terminal 3 is also part of the airport's ongoing development programme.

These projects are intended to improve the airport's existing facilities while the larger West Terminal project moves through its planning stages.

A Long-Term Expansion for Phoenix Sky Harbor

The selection of American Airlines as the primary carrier gives the future West Terminal a clear airline partner as Phoenix plans for its next stage of growth.

For now, the development remains a long-term infrastructure project rather than an immediate change for passengers. Travellers flying through Phoenix should continue to follow the terminal and flight information provided with their current bookings.

Once completed, the West Terminal is expected to give Phoenix Sky Harbor additional capacity and modern passenger facilities as demand for air travel in the region continues to grow.
