Safari Vacation Packages

What "safari" means

Originally a Swahili word for journey. Now it means wildlife viewing trips, usually in 4x4 vehicles with trained guides. Morning and evening drives catch animals at their most active. Midday heat sends everyone back to camp.

Trip structure

Most safaris follow patterns. Wake before dawn. Drive during cool morning hours when animals hunt and graze. Return to lodge for lunch and afternoon rest. Head out again late afternoon until dark. Repeat.

Park fees matter

Wildlife reserves charge daily entry fees. These fees fund conservation and protect animals. Fees vary by country and park. Tanzania and Kenya charge $50-80 per person per day. This adds up on multi day safaris.

Physical requirements

Game drives involve sitting in vehicles on bumpy roads. Camps require walking between tents and facilities. Some walking safaris demand fitness. Most safaris work for any age and fitness level.

Season affects everything

Wet seasons mean lush landscapes and newborn animals but some roads become impassable. Dry seasons concentrate animals around water sources, making viewing easier, but landscapes look brown.

Safety considerations

Guides handle safety. Follow their instructions exactly. Don't leave vehicles unless permitted. Don't approach animals. Wildlife kills more people in Africa than any other cause.

Budget camping

Tent camping in designated park campsites. You bring or rent camping equipment. Cook your own food. Cheap but requires safari skills and equipment.

Mobile camps

Tour operators set up camps that move with animal migrations. Canvas tents, camp beds, bush showers. Guides cook meals. More comfortable than basic camping.

Permanent tented camps

Fixed campsites with large canvas tents on platforms. Proper beds, private bathrooms, electricity. Restaurant and bar. Mid-range pricing.

Safari lodges

Permanent buildings, often with pools, wifi, and full amenities. Rooms instead of tents. More comfortable but less immersive. Range from mid-range to luxury.

Luxury lodges

High-end properties with private guides, excellent food, and premium service. Some include private vehicles. Small number of guests. Expensive but memorable.

Location matters

Standard game drives

4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs. Guide and driver (sometimes same person). 4-6 guests per vehicle. Morning and evening drives. Most common safari format.

Walking safaris

On foot with armed guides. Slower pace. Learn about smaller creatures, tracks, plants. More dangerous. More intimate. Limited to certain parks and seasons.

Night drives

Spotlights reveal nocturnal animals. See leopards hunting, bush babies, aardvarks, and other creatures hidden during day. Not permitted in all parks.

Boat/canoe safaris

Water-based viewing along rivers. Hippos, crocodiles, birds, and animals coming to drink. Peaceful and different perspective. Okavango Delta and Chobe River excel at this.

Horseback safaris

View wildlife while riding horses. Available in limited locations. Requires riding experience. Botswana offers this.

Hot air balloon safaris

Float over Serengeti or Masai Mara at sunrise. See migration from above. Expensive addition but spectacular. Includes champagne breakfast after landing.

Fly-in safaris

Small planes connect remote camps. Saves road time. See landscapes from air. Costs more but lets you access distant parks easily.

Dry season (June-October)

Animals gather at water sources. Easier to spot wildlife. Less vegetation obscures views. Cooler temperatures. Higher prices. More vehicles. Best time for first safaris.

Wet season (November-May)

Rain transforms landscapes. Newborn animals appear. Migratory birds arrive. Cheaper prices. Fewer tourists. Some roads impassable. Animals disperse making viewing harder. Photography more difficult in rain.

Great Migration timing

Gorilla trekking

Possible year-round. Drier months (June-September, December-February) mean easier hiking. Wet season works too since gorillas don't care about rain.

South Africa

Summer (May-September) brings better viewing. Winter (November-March) sees newborns but thicker vegetation.

Book when

Popular parks and lodges fill 6-12 months ahead during peak season. Last-minute availability appears but limits choices. Book gorilla permits as far ahead as possible since daily permits are limited.

Clothing

Neutral colors (tan, olive, brown). Avoid bright colors and white. Long sleeves and pants protect from sun and insects. Light layers since mornings cool, afternoons hot. One warm jacket for early drives. Leave camouflage at home (illegal in some countries).

Gear

Binoculars make a huge difference. Camera with telephoto lens. Extra batteries and memory cards. Flashlight or headlamp. Sunglasses and hat. Buff or bandana for dust.

Health

Yellow fever vaccination required for some countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for most safari areas. Consult travel doctor 6-8 weeks before departure. Bring antimalarial pills, insect repellent, sunscreen, basic first aid.

Documents

Passport valid six months past return. Print visa confirmations. Print travel insurance policy. Store documents in waterproof bag.

Money

US dollars work across East Africa. South African rand in southern Africa. Bring smaller bills for tips. Credit cards accepted at lodges but carry cash for tips and incidentals.

Expectations

Animals don't perform. Some drives see little. Some see incredible action. Weather affects viewing. Patience matters. Don't expect BBC documentary scenes every drive.
